Aboubacar Demba Camara, né en 1944 à Saraya, un village de Kouroussa était le charismatique chanteur et leader du Bembeya Jazz National, l’un des groupes phares de la révolution culturelle guinéenne des années 1960-70. Surnommé le « Dragon de la chanson africaine », il a marqué l’histoire par sa voix puissante et ses performances électrisantes qui mêlaient tradition mandingue et modernité jazz. Artiste engagé et populaire, il incarnait l’élan culturel de la Guinée indépendante, mais sa carrière fut tragiquement interrompue le 5 avril 1973, à Dakar, près du Phare des Mamelles à l’âge de 29 ans, dans un accident de voiture, privant l’Afrique de l’Ouest d’une étoile fulgurante.

Aboubacar Demba Camara, born in 1944 in Saraya, a village in Kouroussa, was the charismatic singer and leader of Bembeya Jazz National, one of the flagship bands of Guinea’s cultural revolution of the 1960s-70s. Nicknamed the “Dragon of African Song,” he left a mark on history with his powerful voice and electrifying performances that blended Mandingue tradition with modern jazz. A committed and popular artist, he embodied the cultural momentum of independent Guinea, but his career was tragically cut short on April 5, 1973, in Dakar, near the Phare des Mamelles, at the age of 29, in a car accident, depriving West Africa of a dazzling star.
