Mafory Bangoura was nothing short of a force of nature. In colonial Conakry, she rose from the life of a seamstress and neighborhood activist to become the most formidable women of the Guinean Revolution. She wasn’t just present in the fight for independence-she led it.

Hadja Mafory endured more than fifty days in prison, faced down colonial authorities, and sacrificed her own wealth, selling jewelry, diamonds, and gold to free her comrades.
When the men hesitated or faltered, she acted.

She orchestrated strikes, mobilized women across neighborhoods, and even led the famous women’s sex strike-to get women with husbands too lazy to get involved in revolutionary independentist activity to get with the program or desert the bed.

Foremost anti-colonial, she didn’t wait for permission, she demanded justice, action, and freedom, and she did it all with a clarity of purpose that turned her into a legend while she was still alive.

This tote honors Hadja Mafory Bangoura not as a distant woman figure in history books, but as a whole revolutionary.

A woman without formal education, she possessed a moral and political brilliance that eclipsed many of her contemporaries.
